Machine experiences breakdowns

The hematology analyser (Sysmex KX 21) machine at Letlhakane Primary Hospital has been having challenges of breaking down since December 2018.
Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Alfred Madigele said the machine was first installed in 2004 and replaced in August 2007.
Dr Madigele said it was not true that the hematology analyser machine had been in use for the past 30 years. He said the machine has passed all internal and external quality control assessments, and that the results could be trusted.
He also noted that the machine would cost government about P500 000 if it had to be replaced.
“Sysmex KX 21 is a robust machine with a lifespan of 10 years plus or minus three years with a comprehensive service contract,” he said, adding that there was no danger of the machine giving wrong results as it was still within the lifespan and continuously passing both internal and external assessment.
Furthermore, he noted that “there is no facility in Botswana that has a similar machine which is 30 years old.”
However, he indicated that his ministry was in the process of replacing all the old equipment at all facilities.
He said the tender had been awarded and that replacement was expected to commence in April 2019.
Member of Parliament for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister if it was true that the hematology analyser machine at Letlhakane hospital had been in use for 30 years.
He also asked if the machine produced results that could be trusted, and wanted the minister to state the danger of inaccurate results from the machine as well as when the machine would be replaced. ENDS
