There is need to promote investment in petroleum products logistical infrastructure such as pipeline and storage facilities.

Francistown Petroleum Depot Expansion Project acting chief executive officer, Mr Mosetlho Kenamile, said this when addressing Francistown City Council meeting recently.

“The annual consumption of petroleum products is about 1.2 billion litters with the South Eastern area of Botswana (Gaborone) consuming 57 per cent, Eastern region (Francistown) consuming 35 per cent while the Northern Region (Maun) consumes 6 per cent and Western Region (Ghanzi area) consumes 2 per cent,” said Mr Kenamile.

He noted that Botswana Oil was a government agent for achievement of the broader economic objectives that multinational companies could not achieve, adding that the company was set up under the Companies Act.

“Botswana Oil Limited manages state-owned strategic reserve facilities, strategic stock as well as bulk storage, distribution facilities and supports the facilitation of meaningful participation of citizens in the petroleum business,” he said.

The project scope, he said, entailed loading and Offloading Road Gantry (6 bay loading of which 5 bay offload) and Depot Administration Building and Authority Services including Security Building and Systems.

He said some of the scopes were provision for future fuel pipelines, truck staging centre adjacent to the existing depot, fire fighting system and Integration with the existing one including product addictive doping system.

Mr Kenamile said the baseline project budget was P630 million and was scheduled to be completed in 18 months. ENDS
