Ministry appoints class teachers aides
24 Feb 2019
Parliament has been informed that the Ministry of Basic Education has created 474 position of teacher aides and 556 positions for reception class teachers, all of which have been appointed.
Responding to a question, Minister of Basic Education, Mr Bagalatia Arone said creation of the posts was in preparation to implementation of multiple pathways and that 78 of the appointments were still to assume duty.
He also told the house that his ministry was in the process of packaging the curricula at senior secondary level into two major pathways and three sub-paths.
Mr Arone explained that the process, which was done through the General Education Curriculum and Assessment Framework (GECAF) would result in the curricula divided into academic and vocational major pathways and three sub-paths of vocational, science and humanities and social sciences streams.
He explained that the fundamental subjects were compulsory and leaners would be given an opportunity to choose subjects from core and open electives.
Assessment would be school based and external.
Kanye South Member of Parliament, Mr Abram Kesupile had asked the minister to state the number of teachers that joined the teaching service and their specialisation pursuant to multiple pathways.
He also wanted to know how the curriculum was packaged to enable students to follow suitable programmes and how the different components of multiple pathways would be assessed for the purposes of awarding certificates. ENDS
