No storm water drainage in Ghanzi

24 Feb 2019

There is no storm water drainage works constructed in the Ghanzi township, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse, has said.

Responding to a question in Parliament from Ghanzi North MP Mr Noah Salakae, Mr Autlwetse said the ministry embarked on a project to construct internal roads and a bus rank in Ghanzi and during the construction of the internal roads in 2007.

He said 128 people were affected, 122 of whom were compensated for plot-cutting and six relocated and fully compensated.

Therefore, he said there was no other person deserving to be relocated, adding that ‘during the construction of the internal roads, all studies were done, including topographic survey’.

All the existing drainage works, he said, were designed and supervised by a competent surveyor who was engaged.

However, the assistant minister said Ghanzi township roads had slopes not side drains, adding that the run-off water from the roads dissipated through seepage on the ground and evaporation, ‘as future drainage outfalls are non-existent.’

Mr Salakae wanted to know if there were any plans to relocate people whose houses had been affected by construction of storm water drainage system in Ghanzi township and when could they expect the process to start since the rainy season was about to begin.

In addition, Ghanzi North MP asked if there was any topographic survey done before constructing such internal roads and if it was done by a competent and registered land surveyor. ENDS
