Maun Education Park lease formalised in 1997
08 Aug 2013
Parliament has been informed that in November 1971, the director of Wildlife and National Parks applied for additional land to increase the area of the Maun Zoological Park on behalf of the Fauna Conservation Society of Ngamiland.
Responding to a parliamentary question on August 6, Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Lebonaamang Mokalake said the approval thereof was communicated by the Tawana Land Board later in November 1972.
He said following this, a Memorandum of Agreement of Lease was signed by both the Land Board and Director of Lands in 1997 as it was intended to formalize the lease.
“This was not in any way a re-designation of user rights,” he added.
Furthermore, Minister Mokalake noted that the signing of the Lease Agreement did not entail any withdrawal of rights, hence Kgosi Letsholathebe or his successor were not consulted on such a matter.
Maun West MP, Mr Tawana Moremi had wanted to know what process the Land Board in Maun used to re-design user rights over the Maun Education Park and issue a lease to the Department of Surveys and Mapping.
He had also asked the minister whether Kgosi Letsholathebe or his successor were consulted on such withdrawal of rights. ENDS
