07 Feb 2019

Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr Fidelis Molao says he is not aware if the DDT College of Medicine has increased its capacity or not.

Mr Molao, however, said the institution’s enrolment of new government sponsored students had gone down by 60 per cent from 123 new learners in 2017/18 to 49 new learners in 2018/19.

He said government had sponsored students at DDT College of Medicine this financial year for programmes approved by Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), adding that the college was subjected to the same requirements as any other education and training provider before students could enroll in their programmes.

He further said there were no courses accredited by Botswana Health Professional Council (BHPC).

However, he indicated that among others, degree in doctors assistants, Bachelor of Science in pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory have been submitted to BHPC for review.

He said Bachelor of Science in pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory and Bachelor of Physiotherapy were currently being processed for provisional accreditation status.

Degree in doctors assistant and Bachelor of dental hygiene therapy, Assistant Minister Molao said, could not be reviewed as they were not listed in the schedule B of Botswana Health Profession Act.

Member of Parliament for Gaborone North, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the assistant minister to state the courses which had been accredited by BHPC at DDT College.

He also asked about government sponsorship for students at the college this financial year as well as if the institution had increased its capacity to enroll students this financial year.ENDS
