Maisantswa ablution blocks not in use

07 Aug 2013

The ablution blocks at Maisantswa Primary School in Kanye have not been in use from 2010 following their completion and handover in 2008, Parliament has been informed.

Answering a question in Parliament on August 6, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said the reason for the closure of the ablution blocks was the unreliable water supply and low water pressures in Kanye, particularly in wards which were at a higher elevation than the rest of the village.

She said as an immediate solution to the problem, the ministry, through Southern District Council would install a 5 000 litre water tank and a booster pump to boost the water pressure and make a connection to the ablution blocks. The work, she added, would be completed by end of September.

Furthermore, the assistant minister said it was anticipated that a permanent solution to the problem would be realised once the North-South water carrier project is completed.

MP for Kanye South, Mr Abram Kesupile had asked the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development if he was aware that the ablution block at Maisantswa Primary School has not been used ever since it was completed and that pupils have reverted to the use of pit latrines.

He also wanted to know reasons for this situation and steps that the minister will take to solve the problem. ENDS
