Molefhi welcomes board
23 Jan 2019
Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Nonofo Molefhi has welcomed the new Public Enterprise Evaluation and Privatization Agency (PEEPA) board following its appointment late last year.
Speaking at a brief board meeting on January 22, Mr Molefhi said it had become untenable for a strategic organisation like PEEPA to function without a constituted board.
“PEEPA is seen as an important organization in our service delivery, economic diversification and rationalisation of public institutions. Cabinet late last year decided to appoint the board as an important factor in our overall strategic governance framework,” said the minister.
Mr Molefhi applauded members for agreeing to serve on the board saying it was the biggest and highest recognisable service that was not comparable to any remuneration.
He told the board members that they were entrusted with a huge responsibility.
Mr Molefhi said privatisation had been a long dragging challenge with a lot of work still needing to be done.
“Privatisation has somehow eluded us but we will pursue it. We will have to demystify and nullify stereotypes about it. The board’s biggest mandate is to make high level strategic decisions. One of the challenges you might encounter is an under resourced organisation which resulted from lack of development planning,” he said.
For his part, the assistant minister in the same ministry, Mr Machana Shamukuni, said given PEEPA’s strategic importance, government was ready to offer the necessary support so that they could hit the ground running. He said government had been battling with various privatisation models but with the newly established board, traction would be gained.
Board chairperson Ms Tiny Kgatlhwane said they had already had an initial meeting which had revealed a few challenges that needed attention. ENDS
