The Education Infrastructure and Management Company (EIMC) has commenced a P265 million refurbishment programme targeting 22 public secondary schools across Botswana.
The programme, running from August 2026 to March 2027, is the first phase of EIMC’s school refurbishment initiative aimed at improving the safety, functionality and quality of public education infrastructure.
In an interview, EIMC Head of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Ms Keolebogile Diswai, said the programme was designed not only to improve school infrastructure but also to create opportunities for youth employment and skills development.
“This programme is not only about refurbishing schools. It is also about creating opportunities for skills development, employment and participation of local communities,” she said.
The 22 schools include Donga Junior Secondary School in Francistown, Gobojango Junior Secondary School, Madikwe Junior Secondary School in Mathubudukwane, Maiteko Junior Secondary School in Mabutsane, Makalamabedi Junior Secondary School, Maoka Junior Secondary School in Gaborone, Marakanelo Junior Secondary School in Ncojane, Mphuthe Junior Secondary School in Letlhakeng, Patikwane Junior Secondary School in Mabeleapudi, Rakops Junior Secondary School and Ramokgonami Junior Secondary School.
Senior secondary schools earmarked for refurbishment are Gaborone Senior Secondary School, Lobatse Senior Secondary School, Lotsane Senior Secondary School in Palapye, Matshekge Senior Secondary School in Bobonong, Maun Senior Secondary School, Moeding College in Otse, Molefi Senior Secondary School in Mochudi, Moshupa Senior Secondary School, Seepapitso Senior Secondary School in Kanye, Shoshong Senior Secondary School and Tutume McConnell College.
Ms Diswai said qualified Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates and artisans would be engaged in the works, while Ikageng Public Works Programme beneficiaries would work alongside artisans as assistants.
“This will allow beneficiaries to gain practical experience and benefit from skills transfer,” she said.
She said the EIMC, in partnership with the Presidential Youth Empowerment Campaign (PYEC), had also mobilised young people with construction-related qualifications to participate in the programme.
Ms Diswai added that building materials would be procured from local vendors and suppliers.ENDS
