Hostel situation at school irks Mosolotshane residents
14 Jan 2019
Some residents of Mosolotshane in the Shoshong constituency have expressed concern about the inhabitable state of the hostel facilities at Mothamo Junior Secondary School.
Residents aired their displeasure during a kgotla meeting addressed by Shoshong Member of Parliament, Mr Dikgang Makgalemele recently.
One of the residents, Ms Gracious Otimilwe said the situation was not conducive for learners.
Ms Otimilwe was equally concerned about the school’s below par performance, adding that even students who were admitted with good Primary School Leaving Examination results faltered.
“As parents, we do our all to instill discipline in our children and encourage them to take their studies seriously,” she said, adding that the school was reportedly experiencing shortage of food, a situation which was likely to impact negatively on their children’s performance.
Parents pleaded with Mr Makgalemele to intervene for the learning environment to improve.
Mr Makgalemele also concurred with the parents as he had toured the facility in the past, adding that he had informed the minister responsible, Mr Bagalatia Arone about the situation at the school and promised to follow up.
He however, said the situation was not only unique to Mothamo JSS, as other schools like Ramokgonami JSS, which currently admits students from some of the villages in his constituency was equally affected.
Despite the challenges, Mr Makgalemele pleaded with parents to encourage their children to persevere and never allow the conditions to interfere with their learning or even use the situation as an excuse to engage in negative acts.
For his part, councillor for Mosolotshane ward, Mr Joel Sebina appreciated the good PSLE results of Mosolotshane Primary School and credited parents, teachers and pupils for scoring 79.7 per cent, adding that despite the challenges, they were committed and devoted to learning.
He appealed to the Member of Parliament to assist the primary school with a computer laboratory as its ICT equipment is currently piled in a storeroom and not benefiting the learners. ENDS
