VP advises officers

Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane has implored heads of government departments in Boteti to prioritise job creation, fight poverty and unemployment especially amongst the youth.

 
Speaking in a meeting with departmental heads in Letlhakane yesterday, the vice president said as they prepared for National Development Plan 11 midterm review, they should ensure its objectives were aligned to Vision 2036.
 
They were told to assess the impact of constituency community projects which in some areas had not yet been implemented.
 
He emphasised that the projects must benefit communities and change people’s lives.
 
Mr Tsogwane said it was crucial to provide guidance on NDP projects and prioritise village development plans.
 
The vice president said there was need to prioritse solar street lighting noting that fighting crime in areas that were not electrified was a challenge.
 
He revealed that government was going to push for internet connectivity in rural areas to enable the youth to access information easily especially job advertisements.
 
There was need to drive a knowledge-based economy in rural areas, he said.
 
On another matter, Mr Tsogwane said elections were the foundation and base for peace and urged public officers to encourage people to register to take advantage of the ongoing supplementary registration.
 
Another speaker, District Officer for Development Mr Goaletsa Keitumetse had earlier informed the gathering that there were 1 509 Poverty Eradication Programme applicants out of which 1 432 were assessed and found eligible.
 
Mr Keitumetse said a total of 1 078 projects had been funded with 922 of them operational while 131 were not running. A total of 25 projects had failed and 36 were excelling.
 
The sub-district, he said, was allocated P3.7 million for the programme during the 2018/19 financial year.
 
Mr Keitumetse said the sub-district expenditure stood at 92.2 per cent adding that the current backlog stood at 431 projects.
 
He also informed the meeting that two toilet paper manufacturing machines in Boteti were not operational while the charcoal machine was running.
 
The charcoal machinery which was for Boteti East had been assembled and its produce had been sent to Botswana Bureau of Standards.
 
Training on the operation of the toilet paper machinery earmarked for Boteti West was scheduled to start on January 10.
 
Mr Keitumetse said a total of 335 project were funded through Youth Development Fund to the tune of P31 150 690.60 since inception of the programme in 2009/2010.
 
Of the 335 projects funded, 287 were operational, 48 collapsed while 17 were still at procurement stage and one relocated to Tonota Sub-district. Ends
