Deputy attorney general, Mr Morulaganyi Chamme, will be laid to rest in Mahalapye on Saturday(January 5).
The 56-year old Mr Chamme succumbed to illness on New Year’s Eve, following an illustrious career in the civil service spanning 34 years.
He joined the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) in 1984 as state counsel and rose through the ranks over the years. At the time of his passing, he was a government attorney and deputy attorney general responsible for civil litigation.
A memorial service in Gaborone today was attended by, among others, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady Neo Masisi.
Speakers described Mr Chamme as a repository of the Attorney General’s Chambers, defender of justice and a humble servant of government.
“He made statutes and laws of this country with deep-seated calmness and professionalism. There has been a number of high level cases where Mr Chamme was a good counsel. He was also very resourceful in executing tasks given by the minister to the Attorney General’s Chambers,” said permanent secretary in the ministry of Defence, Justice and Security, Ms Segakweng Tsiane.
Attorney General, Advocate Abraham Keetshabe, said even though Mr Chamme was naturally a quiet person, he was nevertheless a hard worker who guided young attorneys at the Attorney General’s Chambers.
“Chamme was a modest person and we are privileged to have had the opportunity of working with him. Chamme’s legacy will continue to live in the attorneys he groomed at the Attorney General’s Chambers,” said the Attorney General.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr Stephen Tiroyakgosi, said they learnt many things from Mr Chamme including the General Orders, employment law and the business of government.
He said Mr Chamme had an amazing wealth of knowledge and never got tired of imparting his wisdom to the many attorneys who came through the AGC. “Over the period of 27 years that I have known him, I have always regarded him as an encyclopedia in terms of the law and government business," Mr Tiroyakgosi said.
Chairman of the Law Society of Botswana, Mr Diba Diba said Mr Chamme was a genuine, principled and humble man who carried the responsibilities of his office with maturity, fairness and dedication.
He said justice and reason were Mr Chamme’s guiding considerations when conducting a matter. “He was trustworthy and was viewed with integrity. It is not often that an attorney commands the respect of all his colleagues as Mr Chamme did,” said Mr Diba. BOPA
