Trust will help govt fight poverty unemployment

05 Dec 2018

Assistant Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Mr Moiseraele Goya says We Can Trust will go a long way in assisting the government to fight poverty and unemployment.
Launching We Can Trust in Palapye recently, Mr Goya said this Trust is about coordinating and enhancing the growth of creative and performing arts to help develop, nurture and sustain talent in Botswana.
He said the mandate of this trust resonated well with the national transformational agenda of transformation that the country was embarking upon.

He said the country was battling with two phenomena, poverty and unemployment and as such the performing arts industry could be grown to annihilate such challenges.
Mr Goya also commended the founder of the Trust, saying women deserve to be celebrated.
“We come from a background of a patriarchal dominated society, where our traditions relegate women to second class citizens, to the narrow confines of kitchens, to domestic chores, to less prestigious, less rewarding professions and occupations,” he said.

However, the assistant minister said it was refreshing to learn that the society had since graduated from this backward thinking as more women were playing significant roles to create a more inclusive society.
For his part, a lecturer from University of Kwa-Zulu Natal School of Opera and Choral, Mr Lionel Mkhwanazi added that it was good to turn a dream into a reality and prosperity by launching such a Trust in Botswana.
Mr Mkhwanazi rhetorically asked how the 21st century school of arts would look like and how it would shape today’s generations, bearing in mind the challenges that constantly face societies such as drug abuse, unemployment and poverty.

He said that made lives of young stars complicated, as there were many issues that needed to be dealt with, and that forced many to look back before moving forward.
He said this calls for one to create a comfortable environment where 21st century student/child could freely explore and discover who they are.
Mr Mkhwanazi said letting them understand their own god-given talent was like finding their own throne or purpose in life.

He appreciated the great initiative that the Botswana government had taken to bring Batswana students to South Africa, where most of them attained high quality education in arts. ENDS
