PSLE results improve slightly

Botswana Examination Council (BEC) has released the 2018 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results indicating a 1.20 per cent improvement over last year’s in the credit grades of C and better.
Addressing the media yesterday, BEC executive secretary Professor Brian Mokopakgosi said overall performance in the credit grades was 72.82 per cent compared to the 71.62 per cent attained in 2017.
He said the percentage of candidates who obtained grade A went up by 2.15 per cent from 17.11 per cent recorded in 2017 to 19.26 per cent this year.
This year, he said, 19.14 per cent obtained grade B compared to 18.78 per cent in 2017, representing a slight increase of 0.36 per centRegarding grade D, he said there was a decrease of 2.04 per cent from 21.62 per cent in 2017 to 19.58 per cent this year.
For grade E, there had been an increase of 0.99 per cent from 6.55 per cent to 7.54 per cent in 2018, he said.
Professor Mokopakgosi said a total of 46 432 candidates wrote the 2018 examination compared to 44 427 in 2017 showing an increase in candidature of 4.5 per cent out of which 23 425 (50.45 per cent) were females and 23 007 (49.55 per cent) males.
Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in all subjects, he said.
Professor Mokopakgosi said the south east region continued to top all the centers around the country at 83.9 per cent followed by north east while Ghanzi region emerged as the most improved with a percentage of 6.07 in all grades.
In 2017, Professor Mokopakgosi said there were 15 590 or 41.85 per cent male candidates and 21 661 females or 58.15 per cent who sat for the PSLE examination.ENDS
