Lawyer advises Batswana to read contract before signing

19 Sep 2018

Mr Uyapo Ndadi of Ndadi law firm has advised Batswana to always read contract before signing.

Speaking during the consumer watchdog workshop in Gaborone recently, Mr Ndadi stated that contracts were life changing documents and therefore there was need that they be read and understood before being signed.

Mr Ndadi said one had to engage with the terms and conditions of the contract and if they did not understand legal terms they should engage lawyers to be able to assist.

“It is cheaper to get into a contract one understands having engaged a lawyer than rushing to sign,” he stated saying one might lose a lot because certain binding things would have been overlooked.

Mr Ndadi said every contract had a financial consequence hence life changing, “be it a bond, car insurance one must read it”.

He even encouraged Batswana to read contracts including difficult times such as when in hospitals saying unfortunately most people realised the need to have read, when a need arises

However, Mr Ndadi said he was aware that most people complained of high exubient fees  private lawyers charge.

Mr Ndadi said there were always negotiations on how to make payments  looking at affordability.

He further stressed that most people thought that they would discontinue payment when the case was lost, adding that they ought to know that even if the case was lost, the client continues paying the lawyer.

“The bottom line is that you have to pay  regardless,” he said.  Ends
