Fifth junior school opens in Maun

16 Sep 2018

President Mokgweetsi Masisi says Maitlamo Junior Secondary School, which is the fifth junior school in Maun, was built to address shortage of facilities prevalent in most schools in the North West region.

Speaking at the school’s official opening and prize giving ceremony recently, President Masisi urged pupils to ensure maximum use of the facilities as they provided a conducive environment for learning.

The junior school, which was constructed at a cost of P200 million has 30 classrooms.

Its first cohort of pupils, who started Form One in 2016, will sit for their Junior Certificate Examinations at the end of this year.

President Masisi said it was important for teachers, parents and other stakeholders to unite to ensure good academic results.

The President noted that government was committed to providing infrastructure for the schools and urged the private sector to adopt schools and not only sponsor prize giving ceremonies.

He recognised that parents played a major role in moulding children and thus urged them to have a positive relationship with teachers to ensure they achieve their common goals.

He urged students to refrain from vandalising school property as well as drug and alcohol abuse.

He said they should  rather commit to their academic work to become successful citizens.

Further, President Masisi congratulated those who received awards and also encouraged those who did not do well to be determined to perform better next year.

The overall best performers were Erimuno Marenga, Kimberly Mosheti and Omogolo Baleki in Forms One, Two and Three respectively.

An official from one of the sponsors and partners, G4 Consulting and Engineers, Mr Bontsi Gubago said his company sponsored the best students in Mathematics and Science to motivate them in the field.

He said awards were meant to up the level of competition between students in Science and Mathematics.

Mr Gubago pledged that from next year, his company would sponsor all secondary schools in Maun.

In her welcome remarks, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi observed that President Masisi officially performed the school’s groundbreaking in 2014 when he was acting Minister of Education.

Kgosi Moremi said Maun people were overjoyed with the immaculate junior school, adding however that it required a few more classrooms and laboratories including one for French lessons as well as a tarred road to connect it to other parts of the village. ENDS
