10 Sep 2018
Voter registration for the 2019 general election is reported to be progressing without a hitch in Francistown.
In an interview, Francistown District Principal Elections Officer, Mr Nyanga Nyanga said people were trickling at a slow but promising pace at all polling stations in the city.
A total of 74 polling stations, 25 in Francistown east, 25 in Francistown south and 24 in Francistown west had been set up, he said. Mr Nyanga said preliminary reports indicated that some polling stations had so far registered only five people whilst others had gone up to 50 people as per Sunday’s round-up.He explained that all polling stations were manned by two adequately trained officers.
Asked if there was going to be any supplementary registration, government had reverted to the old act of not using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), Mr Nyanga said the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) would decide at the end of the ongoing voter registration.
He explained that in most cases, the IEC decided on the supplementary registration based on the turnout, especially if it had been low. At the time of going to press, it was not yet clear how many people were expected to register in Francistown.
Registration started on September 3 and will end November 3.ENDS
