Cases involving children concern
04 Sep 2018
Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela has raised a concern about the escalating cases of children registered under the Department of Social Welfare.
He said out of the cases registered under the department, 60 per cent involved children.
“This is a serious concern as it shows that our communities are facing serious social ills that range from a high number of cases of children in conflict with the law due to absentee parents leading to children who are abandoned and neglected by their parents” he said.
He explained that in June the sub-district children protection committee addressed kgotla meetings talking to women on issues of children and was evident that most children were living alone while their parents were either working in far away areas or were neglectful, while some were left with grandparents, who were too old to take care or instill discipline on them.
Mr Dibeela said in an effort to address these issues, the department continues to collaborate with other stakeholders to address social ills affecting the society and further stated that to date, 11 children protection committees have been trained in the sub-district of which Lorolwane, Moshana, Sebego, Selokolela, Gasita are fully functional.
On issue of employment, he explained that the sub-district was allocated funds to the tune of P320 000 to fund youth projects.
“Forty-one project proposals were received and out of that number, 26 were approved at P2 922 408 and this brought the total number of funded projects to 282” he said.
He said the projects had since created 503 job opportunities for the youth, adding that the remaining funds would be used to capacitate youth on business management.
He said over P2 million had been allocated to the sub-district to carry out paving of roads in Kanye, drainage construction in Lotlhakane East and culvert construction across Moshana and Molapowabojang/Lorwana streams. Ends
