Ministry reviewes policies programmes

27 Jun 2018

Ministry  of Basic Education has reviewed policies and programmes that hindered it to deliver on its mandate.

Basic Education minister, Mr Bagalatia Arone told Parliament on June 26 that his ministry had undertaken a schools mapping exercise to identify infrastructure needs for the country now and beyond NDP 11 planning period.

Furthermore, Minister Arone said they were also committed to the implementation of the Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan, which would see a decongestion of the Primary School Syllabus and allow teachers more time to focus on basic literacy and numeracy skills.

He said with learners better prepared for Primary education, they would progress successfully through secondary education and beyond.

The pathway model, minister Arone said would allow  learners to choose less academic and more practical courses to follow, ensuring a self-reliant and productive work force for the future of Botswana.

Also, he said that the ministry had developed a budget to conduct the Commission of Inquiry to look into the continuing  poor academic results and was currently working on the Terms of Reference and Invitation to Tender for the procurement of consultants capable of delivering a comprehensive and impartial report.

Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Dr Phenyo Butale had asked the Minister to state plans in place to improve poor education results and what had been done so far to implement a motion passed in Parliament for the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry into the ever plummeting education results.
