25 Jun 2018

Member of Parliament for Ghanzi North, Mr Noah Salakae has promised to contribute P10 000 towards Itekeng Secondary school prize giving ceremony.

Mr Salakae made the pledge after a 20-kilometre walk, which doubled as sponsored walk to raise funds for Itekeng Secondary School prize giving ceremony to be held in November, as well as fitness walk dubbed ‘walk for life’ for Ghanzi community on June 23, where he was guest walker.

Mr Salakae, who said was a proud alumnae of Itekeng secondary school, both as a teacher and student, also pledged to pay for one night stay accommodation at Kalahari Arms Hotel for the best overall student during the prize giving ceremony.

Again, he said Kalahari Arms Hotel had also promised a complimentary one-night accommodation for the best students in Mathematics and Home Economics.

He challenged all stakeholders to make contributions towards the prize giving ceremony, saying ‘small portions make larger piece’ and further alluded to a Chinese proverb, ‘a journey of thousands miles starts with a single step.’

Mr Salakae expressed gratitude to have been chosen as guest walker saying he shared a lot of history with the school, having designed and developed the school logo while he was a student.

On the other hand, stakeholders made pledges, and among them was Councillor Onalethata Ngati of Bosele Ward who pledged a cow to be slaughtered during prize giving ceremony.

The prize giving organising committee chairperson, Mr Simeon Kandijou thanked all those who made pledges, saying it was motivating to see them taking part in shaping the students’ future.

For his part, Ghanzi District Council chief public health officer, Mr Gregar Lepang explained that they used the 20km quarterly walk as a preventative measure against diseases.

Mr Lepang thus challenged community members not to rely on the walk but should complement it with regular physical activities.

He indicated that non-communicable diseases became a global and life threatening phenomena as a result of concentrating more on infectious illnesses. ENDS
