Summit Designates BVI Vaccine Bank

President Advocate Duma Boko arriving from South Africa yesterday, where he participated in the 46th Ordinary Summit of SADC head of States and Government held Durban. According to a SADC communique, the summit designated Botswana Vaccine Institute to be a regional Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Antigen/Vaccine Bank to strengthen regional efforts for prevention and control of FMD outbreaks. The summit also urged member states to enhance preparedness in view of the anticipated El Niño-induced climate shocks by implementing early warning systems. Also at the summit former Presidents Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi and Dr. Joaquim Alberto Chissano, of Mozambique were appointed members of the SADC Panel of Elders to support Mediation, Conflict Prevention and Preventative Diplomacy efforts in the SADC region.
