Galefete makes Kgari Sechele proud

Katlo Galefete has made history for Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary School by being among the 2017 BGCSE top 10 achievers.
The rather unusual feat was celebrated at her former school last June 21.
It comes at a point when the school is facing numerous challenges that have negatively impacted on its performance.
The dry spell of good results had also resulted in the public having a negative perception about the school in general.
As a result, most parents whose children were admitted at Kgari Sechele Secondary School with good results from their Junior Certificate, preferred transferring them to other schools, said the school head Mr Lapologang Kolagano.
He said from 2012, the school’s performance was poor with “our major areas of concern being lack of discipline among most students.”
However, the school head said programmes such as boot camps have helped improve discipline, resulting in improvement in results.
Mr Kolagano said the involvement of parents and other stakeholders such as former students and the police had also had a positive impact.
Last year, he said, the school scooped position 24 out of 34, which was a huge improvement.
Now Galefete’s achievement has re-written the school’s history as it is now being likened to a lion that had been sleeping and had just awakened.
Galefete is the first student who has made the school shine with her remarkable 48 points, after attaining six A* and one A, earning herself a scholarship to study for A levels at Kolobeng Livingstone College.
Motivating her peers who had gathered to celebrate her achievement, Galefete challenged them to have a vision and work towards achieving it.
She also encouraged them to work smart, something she said helped her succeed in her studies, revealing that she personally did not like to work with things that involved a lot of physical work but rather smart work.
Although she is not going to tertiary immediately, she said, she would like to pursue a career in Chemical Engineering as it offers a lot of opportunities.
Her class teacher, Ms Malebogo Nakedi said Galefete was a naturally academically gifted child, as she excelled in all subjects.
She described her as a quiet and friendly student, who was always willing to assist others; qualities her teacher said helped her a lot as she would regularly use her to help other students and made a positive impact on them. Ends
