Letlhakeng battles delinquency

24 Jun 2018

Hardwork, discipline, dedication and focus were some of the factors that pupils of Gothibamang Primary School in Letlhakeng were encouraged to adhere to in order to make a better future for themselves.

Speaking during an edutainment workshop meant to sensitive the pupils on the consequences of drugs and alcohol abuse as well as engaging in sexual relations at Letlhakeng on Thursday, various speakers urged the pupils to develop responsibility at an early age and focus more on education.

One of the speakers, Mr Emang Mmopiemang informed them that nobody could better shape their lives than themselves.

“Other people can only advice you, but if you are not committed to change then there is little we can do. You live in an era where there are many challenges, but you should know that in life, a person cannot have everything they wish for, so you should learn to make do with the little you have,” he said.

One of the parents, Mr Maipoko Banyatsi indicated that as parents, they were ashamed that their children could be associated with such ill behaviour and appreciated the staff of Gothibamang primary  for organising the workshop.

Detailing the objectives of the day, Senior Teacher in the Guidance and Counselling Department, Ms Motlalepula Plaatjie indicated that they had observed with concern that delinquency among their pupils was on the rise, and even worsened after the installation of streetlights in Letlhakeng.

“We then noted that learners would play along the road under the streetlights until late in the night.

We were also concerned by other vices such as truancy, involvement in sexual activities as well as the use of vulgar language at school,” she said. Ms Plaatjie said in the light of that, they then decided on an edutainment workshop in order to pass the message through drama, song and dance.

She said they also decided to invite Mphuthe Junior Secondary School so they could jointly address the students to prepare for a smooth transition.

For her part, Gothibamang Primary School head, Ms Nyaladzo Kgetse pleaded with the pupils to heed the messages presented by various speakers as it could help mould them into responsible young people. ENDS
