No funds for Letlhakane sewerage
13 Jun 2018
The Assistant Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services Mr Itumeleng Moipisi says lack of sewerage schemes in Letlhakane pose a high risk of polluting the surrounding environment.
Mr Moipisi told Parliament on Tuesday that the designs for Letlhakane Central Sewerage Scheme were complete, but there were no funds for the construction of the project this financial year saying the project was expected to be budgeted for in the 2019/20 financial year.
However, Mr Moipisi said as a medium tern intervention , the ministry would rehabilitate the existing wastewater treatment ponds to accommodate more sewerage inflows. These interventions, he said were funded under the World Bank loan.
Regarding the consultant engaged, Mr Moipisi said Waterweb Works consultant was paid P5million but the project could not be accomodated in NDP 11 since priority was placed on projects that were ongoing.
He also told Parliament that continued use of pit latrines and septic tank soakaways will also pollute the ground water.
Boteti East MP Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister when Letlhakane would have a centralised sewage system.
He further wanted to know whether it was true that there was a consultant paid to do the project, and that he delivered on his mandate but the plans were shelved because of lack of funds. ENDS
