Kang public library raises bar

Traditionally, a public library provides readers with platform to broaden their mind and research materials through access to a wide database of information.

Speaking in an interview, principal library officer at Kang Public Library Ms Angelinah Tjaondjo said they had  gone beyond the traditional arrangement regarding their services.

Ms Tjaondjo pointed out that among other services they offered was capacity and character building.

In this regard, she said their public library cultivated and instiled a spirit of competence and excellence among graduates, interns and other scholars by offering basic work training.

She stated that they formed reading clubs where slow learning students were empowered through effective reading skills.

She added that they had made an effort to look for low performing students to capacitate them in research skills in a move to improve their academic performance.

She highlighted that they have recruited 22 learners from Kang Primary School.

“The exercise is running smoothly though the instructor did not have enough time to make sufficient follow-ups because she is also assigned to help with the opening of Hukuntsi Public Library,” she said.

Ms Tjaondjo further noted that they had initiated a special need programme for Mahusane Primary School pupils living with disability where they interacted with learners from other schools every Wednesday to play computer games.

Ms Tjaondjo said that library was for everyone regardless of age, occupation or background.

“In this regard, 15 elderly people have been imparted with basic computer training to gel well with technologically advanced society,” she said.

She further noted that games such as chess, monopoly and scrabble, were re some of the services they offered to increase the development and stimulation of young people’s intellectual capacity.

Speaking on some of the programmes that are in the pipeline, Ms Tjaondjo highlighted that they would soon introduce talk over tea platform and invite community members to discuss ways of improving their livelihoods. ENDS
