The Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, Mr Eric Molale says Debswana Mining Company is exploring various housing models for its staff.
Mr Molale told Parliament on June 6 that the company recently published an Expression of Interest (EIO) for provision of housing by third parties.
The minister explained that it was one option of the housing project which members of the community in Letlhakane could benefit from if the company opted for renting from individuals.
He said given the magnitude of the undertaking, the allocation of such work would be spread across a number of service providers to manage risk and also as a form of empowerment.
“As indicated, Debswana is still exploring various housing models and if the company opts for renting from community members then individuals will benefit,” said the minister.
He further said small companies would benefit from the housing project as there was a whole spectrum of services which would be required.
“Debswana engaged several communities in Boteti, including the community of Letlhakane, Boteti Sub-district Development Committee and Boteti Sub Council.
Additionally, the EIO was advertised in most national newspapers. “A rental survey that was also undertaken provided another avenue of information dissemination,” said the minister.
He said the survey consultants started their exercise by conducting kgotla meetings in each village, and tha communities were generally appreciative of the initiative. He said there have been 21 responses to the expression of interest.
Boteti East MP, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister whether the EIO had catered for the local community, and whether small companies would benefit. He further asked how private individuals with land would benefit. Ends
