Parents involvement vital

Pelotelele Primary School head, Mr Shadrack Jani says parents’ direct involvement in students school work is the reason behind his school’s Standard 7 excellent performance over the years.
The school has managed to maintain Primary Leaving School Examination (PLSE) results at 80 per cent or better pass rate for the past three years, something the school head attributed to a great work relationship between the school and parents.
In an interview with BOPA, Mr Jani said they had put in place strategies meant to create a conducive environment to enable parents’ direct involvement in their children’s school work, working hand in hand with teachers in order to bring the best out of their students.
In the last three years, the school yielded 92.3 per cent, 100 per cent and 88.9 per cent pass rates and Mr Jani explained that in the recent years, they had been making sure parents were always on the forefront and engaged in their children’s studies. He said they have an after school study for students sitting for examinations this year. Mr Jani said the after school study group is supervised by parents and currently they have four groups with each having been adopted by a parent who monitors the students and helps them to carry out their studies after school from 5pm to 5:30pm every day.
“The direct involvement of parents in students work has yielded positive results for his school,” he said.
“Every month end we invite parents and also the leadership of the village for a meeting to discuss and analyse students results. This is meant to outline a comprehensive analysis on students’ academic progress,” he noted. The arrangement, he said, helped teachers to identify challenges faced by students and apply remedial measures immediately.
In cases where a student needed special assistance, both parents and teachers swiftly avail themselves, he added.
Mr Jani said they had recently introduced a ward based competition for Standard Sevens. The students had been divided into three groups, taking into consideration the wards they reside in.
“We announce the results in the presence of the parents and the wards headmen. In that way, students will be drawn into a competition with motivation from the leadership,” he added.
He said the set up aimed at creating a healthy competition among the students, adding that the initiative of inviting the village leadership to every month end results analysis had helped in moulding the characters of students towards their school work.
He said every teacher adopts a certain number of Standard Seven candidtes and assisted them in letter writing and the teacher would later on give feedback on the progress in their end of month results analysis. ENDS
