Land rights transfers worrisome

30 May 2018

Maun Administrative Authority Sub-Council vice chairperson Mr Vepaune Moreti has called for councillors’ intervention in sensitising the community to desist from transferring land rights.

Officially opening the sub-council meeting this week, Mr Moreti said land rights transfer was worrisome as many Batswana were in the process being dispossessed with some ending up without a place to stay.

The vice chairperson urged councillors to advise their respective communities against giving away their land.

He noted that since the beginning of April 91 transfer applications had been received.

Meanwhile, Mr Moreti said for the first quarter of 2018, the Maun Sub Land Board had received 19 land applications with fake certificates.

He called on councillors to warn the community to be vigilant when buying land and to report transgressions to relevant authorities.

On other issues, he said malaria elimination, under five mortality reductions, maintaining a less than one per cent of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS, achieving the global targets of 90-90-90 on HIV/AIDS control will be priority areas for this year.

Still on health issues, he said council had managed to source funds through the American government amounting to P76 000 for the refurbishment of the Matshwane Clinic to make it user  friendly to the youth.

“Once complete, the centre will offer sexual and reproductive services which are youth friendly such as counseling. This is part of the district’s response towards combating teenage pregnancies and other social ills,” he said.

He said renovations were underway and it was expected to be officially launched on June 8.

Councillors heard that the sub-council had been allocated funds for the construction of 23 houses for Remote Area Dwellers, 13 of which will be built at the newly established Xorotsha settlement while 50 houses will be built for non-RADs this financial year. ENDS
