Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Ms Kebonye Moepeng has appealed to staff to steer clear of corruption.

Ms Moepeng was speaking at a meet and greet session with senior staff from the ministry  recently after she had addressed juniors the previous day.

The purpose of the meeting was to introduce herself after being transferred to the ministry. She remind them of their core responsibilities as well as to create awareness of staff responsibility to customers.

Ms Moepeng said reports of corruption in the ministry were shocking and urged all to steer clear of corrupt practices and improve efficiency.

“The ministry has been made aware of allegations on corruption, more prevalent in selling national identity cards, VISA and inflated contracts meant to defraud government,” she said.

She explained that the ministry was developing an anti-corruption policy and strategy to curb corruption activities.

Ms Moepeng also expressed concern on the high number of expired Omang cards.

She said over 198 000 people were in possession of expired Omang cards.

“I am very concerned about the high statistics of people using expired Omang cards, they are essential for everyday use by Batswana to access services offered by government,” she said, adding that they would also be needed in the upcoming elections.

On other issues, Ms Moepeng touched on ministry performance reminding staff to always refer to the Public Service Charter. ENDS
