17 May 2018
Member of Parliament for Bobonong, Mr Shaw Kgathi, who is also Minister of Defence, Justice and Security has informed employees of Tuli Safari Lodge about the amendment of some laws as well as some bills to be tabled during the winter session.
Among the laws amended was the Arms and Ammunition Act, which prohibits the use of certain guns and accessories which have been used to commit crimes.
Mr Kgathi said all guns and gunsmiths must be registered as it has been discovered that some people have a tendency to modify guns.
The MP also informed them that some sections of the penal code have been amended such as increasing the defilement age to 18 years from 16 years.
He said the keeping of human flesh was also an offence, and that rape has been redefined to remove words like sexual gratification.
Mr Kgathi said one of the bills to be presented during the next Parliament sitting was the amendment of the Stock Theft Act, saying there was a cry from the nation that they were losing their livestock hence a need to tighten the grip.
He said the other law awaiting the Presidents signature was the cyber-crime and computer related crime, which prohibits pornographic materials, accessing one’s cellular phone or gadgets without their consent, xenophobic attacks and revenge pornography.
Bobirwa Sub-district deputy district commissioner, Mr Mooketsi Lesetedi encouraged Tuli Safari Lodge employees to register for the 2019 general elections.
Addressing the workers during a meeting held by the area Member of Parliament, the deputy district commissioner stated that registration for general elections started on September 3 up to November 11, 2018.
Mr Lesetedi said they should register in numbers at their polling stations because there would be no supplementary registration.
He said in preparation for registration, the Independent Electoral Commission office in Bobonong was accepting applications for registration clerks and registration supervisors, adding that successful applicants would be engaged for three months.
He said the qualification for the registration clerk was Cambridge School Certificate/BGCSE or equivalent while for a registration supervisor it was a diploma in any field.
Mr Lesetedi informed workers that Bobonong constituency had 92 vacancies for voter registration clerks and four for registration supervisors.
He appealed to them to pass the message to their relatives who were not working to apply for such.
Furthermore, he advised them to check expiry dates of their national identity cards, noting that it was a requirement for voter registration and voting.
Bobonong Sub-land Board secretary, Mr Mpho Keareng said registration for plots was ongoing and urged those that had not done so to register.
Mr Keareng stated that they had started placing plot numbers on plots that have been surveyed across the sub-district.
He also informed the workers that the sub-land board no longer allocated land that was not surveyed or infills for residential and commercial plots in villages.
He, however, said for ploughing fields, the waiting period was three months after submission of the application letter.
Mr Kgathi was accompanied by other heads of departments such as roads, tribal administration, wildlife and national parks, veterinary and the Department of Engineering and Building Services, who informed workers about the services they offered. Ends
