First lady mingles with students

15 May 2018

First Lady Neo Masisi took out time this past weekend to mingle with pupils of Khawa Primary School.

Accompanied by her husband and some top officials from government enclave, Ms Masisi visited the school on the sidelines of the just ended Khawa Dune Challenge.

She pointed out that although she was in Khawa on a different mission, she considered it important to meet and greet the pupils so that they too could feel recognised.

The first lady encouraged the pupils to lay a good foundation for building their future by taking their studies seriously.

She said it was important for future leaders to do well in their studies.

Ms Masisi also played games with the pupils.

Commenting on the visit, the Minister of Basic Education Mr Bagalatia Arone said it was welcome because the ministry was currently targeting education at grass roots level.

He said it would inspire the pupils and showed good leadership qualities on the part of the first lady.

The area MP, Mr Frans van der Westhuisen said the visit would make a positive change in the minds of pupils.

The school came into existence some 25 years ago with a pupil population of  330 including 30 in reception class.

Last year it attained a 32 per cent pass rate.

Some factors normally associated with poor results are the language barrier because most of the parents in the area speak Afrikaans.

Teachers also decry lack of equipment and resources needed for improving performance. Ends
