Destiny shapers competitions sharpen learners skills

Destiny shapers regional competitions attracted 11 primary schools in Boteti region that took part in the competitions held at Supang Memorial School recently.

It was the first time for Boteti to host the competitions, which was themed: Broadcasting as an Agent of Transferable Skills and Knowledge in the 21st Century, while focus was on building the learner’s confidence.

Speaking at the event, Supang school head, Ms Mercy Bayani said they were honoured to be part of the competitions as they had always heard about them from other areas of the country.

She appreciated efforts of the participating schools in the destiny shapers competitions, which exposed learners to a series of activities which played a bigger role as far as the development of learners is concerned.

Activities of the competitions included television reporting, news reading, essay writing, posters spelling bee and debates.

She noted that the activities enhanced the daily learning of a student as well as further develop of creative writing, speaking and shaping the listening skills of the individual.

He also said it was a  platform for students to interact.

For her part, Rethatoleng Primary School head, Ms Kaisara Padiso noted that broadcasting carried an enormous responsibility in education and the role could not be overemphasised.

Ms Padiso noted that the role of the radio was to inform and educate, giving an example of radio lessons that were broadcast on Radio Botswana, saying they had improved the teaching and learning in the classrooms.

She said the adoption of Information Communication Technology in schools had also enhanced learning, hence shaping the destiny of tomorrow’s leaders, adding that they were grooming a diverse learner, who could be globally competitive.

She therefore said the media played a huge role of not only disseminating information, but also creating content, setting agenda for debates and structures of discourse.

Boteti Central Sub-district public relations officer, Ms Marang Gobopang urged participating schools to take the initiative seriously and go forward to be globally competitive in their endeavours.

Ms Gobopang pointed out that activities would not only shape the confidence of the learners, but also help them to be critical thinkers.

She expressed gratitude to the broadcasters organisation that came up with a brilliant idea of enhancing education and motivating learners to enjoy learning. Ends
