Francistown youth appreciate elders

Growing old is one of the phases that come naturally and some elders turn to feel neglected and develop a feeling that they have become less important in their communities.
Some of them also have a fear that their lives have become stagnant, and they become reluctant to make routine medical check-ups.
In an effort to mitigate these worries, one youth in Area W in Francistown, Mr Owen Malala, 32, took it upon himself to appreciate elders in the area and sensitise them on health related matters.
Mr Malala organised an afternoon tea session and snacks for about 50 senior citizens aged 50 and above.
Speaking in an interview at the end of the session, Mr Malala explained that his intention was to remind the elders that they were still valuable, and that their wisdom was still relevant in moulding communities, especially the youth. Mr Malala invited a dietician from Area W Clinic to advice elders on the benefits of healthy eating and exercising.
The elders were also encouraged to undergo screening of non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure and sugar diabetes among others. Additionally, he said elders were advised on what measures to take so as to control and prevent such diseases. “The intention of the afternoon tea session was to appreciate elders and help them understand their importance and relevance in society despite their aging status,” he said.
Mr Malala encouraged the spirit of togetherness as the elders reminisced about years gone by, and they encouraged each other to do medical check-ups. ENDS
