Community policing responsibility for all

07 May 2018

Maunatlala police station commander Assistant Superintendent Mopedi Moipolai has expressed concern over the low number of males who volunteer in cluster policing committees.

In an interview recently, Mr Moipolai said in all his policing areas only Lerala and Tamasane had males in their cluster committees though not in the same numbers as their female counterparts.

He observed that men especially those in their youth were not actively involved when it came to issues of crime prevention.

Assistant Superintendent Moipolai said that crime prevention was everyone’s responsibility regardless of one’s gender.

He noted that people were stereotyped into believing that voluntary work was for ladies only, adding that  men’s input was also needed in fighting crime.

Therefore, he urged men especially the youth to start partaking in community policing.

Sharing the sentiments, Kgosi Phoophoo Mapena of Maunatlala disclosed concern on the youth’s lack of involvement in community policing. Kgosi Mapena said the elderly  in the village were the ones working round the clock to fight crime while the youth chose not to take part.

He emphasised that the safety of the community did  not lie with the police, urging residents to police their areas and report any criminal intents to their cluster officers.

Kgosi Goitse Balebetse of Mokokwana also indicated members of the cluster policing committee in the village were females only, which he said was risky as sometimes they had to attend incidents were physical force was needed before the arrival of the police.

Kgosi Balebetse said that it would be much better if men could volunteer more in cluster committees to add strength to the team.

Kgosi Balebetse commended his cluster committee which is made up of volunteers from Mosweu and Mokokwana villages for their selfless efforts in ensuring that their villages were safe. ENDS
