29 Apr 2018

Girls and Guys Leading Our World initiative, which aims to develop youth into tomorrow’s leaders, recently held a four-day camp for Lerala Junior Secondary School’s Form Ones and Twos.

Ministry of Basic Education, peer education programme coordinator from Palapye region, Ms Itumeleng Thusego-Seabe told BOPA that the programme was attended by two representatives from each level.

She said through the programme, learners were taught life skills and that the less privileged and under performing students were given first preference to boost their self-confidence.

Ms Thusego-Seabe said 47 students attended the programme and the number was to allow for easy interaction and participation.

She said the programme was held in collaboration with youth Peace Corp volunteers from different areas to allow students to express themselves and talk about issues, some not so easy to communicate with adult teachers.

Twelve junior secondary schools have already been covered in the Palapye region and Ms Thusego-Seabe said the programme was well received by students.

The programme covers issues of personal development and leadership, youth sexual and reproductive health, gender and community connection.

Nthabiseng Ramaphane, a Form One student said she learnt the essence of self-esteem.

She said she learnt that SAFE meant Stay calm, Ask questions, Find out by feeling, Exchange ideas for a possible solutions, something she had vowed to preach to her peers. ENDS
