Parastatal board allowances differ

08 Apr 2018

Parliament has been told that parastatal boards were classified into three categories for purposes of determining sitting allowances payable to their members.

Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Nonofo Molefhi said in Category A, the chairperson of the board was paid P2 250 while members were each paid P1 800.

For Category B, he said the chairperson was paid P1 575 while members got P1 260 each.

As for Category C, the minister disclosed that the chairperson was paid P1 103 and members each received P882.

Mr Molefhi, who was answering a question in parliament on Thursday, said the “amount of money earned by individuals constituted personal information that I cannot divulge publicly, save with their consent.”

He said the annual reports from some of the parastatals reflected that for the past three years P55.5 million was spent on sitting allowances or towards board members’ affairs.

Mr Molefhi however said other parastatals were yet to submit their 2017 annual reports.

He explained that government continued to rationalise and merge parastatals as and when it was deemed necessary to do so.

Boteti East MP Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister to state the amount spent on board members of different parastatals for the past three years.

Mr Lelatisitswe wanted to know how much money government had spent on sitting allowances or towards board members’ allowances in the past three years, as well as whether government was considering merging some parastatals. Ends
