His Excellency the President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi has extended condolences on the death Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

In a letter to the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, President Masisi observed that:

“It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the demise of one of the icons of the liberation struggle in South Africa, Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Botswana, and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mrs Madikizela Mandela’s family, the African National Congress, and to the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa.

“Mrs Mandela will be remembered for her selfless devotion and sacrifice during the fight against Apartheid, as well as the promotion of justice, equality and democracy in South Africa, and beyond.

“As you mourn the loss of your beloved heroine, may the people of South Africa find strength and comfort during this time of grief.”
