BQA engages college

Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Dr Alfred Madigele says learners from DDT College of Medicine are attached to Kanye SDA Hospital and Francistown Riverside Clinic for clinical practice.
Dr Madigele told Parliament recently that the programme requirements were specific as to what had to be covered in practical attachments, saying such can be offered at either government or private institutions.
He said the reason why the institution cannot find attachment for its learners in public hospitals was not yet fully established.
He added that Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) investigations had revealed that the college did not have disciplinary policy and a functional student representative council.
BQA, he said had thus instructed the college to ensure SRC elections were introduced within 20 school days from March 22 this year.
He further said the institution did not have Learners Life Support Policy, adding “the college has been guided by Botswana Qualifications Authority on what to do to improve the situation.
If there is no improvement the BQA Act and Regulations will guide on what action to take.”
Again, he said the BQA Act and Regulations provided for suspension and revocation of accreditation of an ETP where there had been clear breach of serious nature.
Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister to state why DDT College of Medicine clinical rotations were only done in private hospitals.
He also wanted to know why the student handbook used by the institution was not endorsed by the SRC. ENDS
