'Lawyers have to be properly qualified'

For a person who is a citizen of Botswana to qualify to be admitted as a legal practitioner, he/she should satisfy the court that they are fit and proper and have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from any of the universities as prescribed in the second schedule to the Legal Practitioner’s Act, Minister of Defence, Justice and Security has said.
Responding to a question in Parliament, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse pointed out that for any university to be included in the schedule; presentation is made to the Chief Justice who periodically includes such universities after consultation with the minister and law society.
Mr Seretse also said one of the universities that were not included in the second schedule would be included after all the necessary administrative process has been concluded.
Lobatse MP, Mr Nehemiah Modubule had asked the minister when the Legal Practitioners Act will be amended to allow graduates of law from other universities other than mentioned in the Act to practice in Botswana. ENDS
