25 Mar 2018

Chief executive officer of Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI), Mr Tiyapo Ngwisanye says the organisation is still recruiting staff.

Briefing Lobatse Town Council meeting recently, Mr Ngwisanye said BGI currently had a staffing ceiling of 225 positions.

At the moment, he said only 115 positions had been filled and 110 remain vacant. He further indicated that all management positions had been filled.

Established as a parastatal in 2014 by an Act of Parliament (BGI Act No 29 of 2014), Mr Ngwisanye said BGI as a custodian of geoscientific information, had the responsibility to undertake research in the field of geoscience and provide specialised geoscientific services.

He also said BGI thrived to promote the search for and exploration of any minerals in Botswana as well as be an advisory body in respect of geoscience and geohazards.

Responding to his presentation, councillors inquired on staff movement from former Geological Survey , who had been affected by the transformation.

Councillors asked Mr Ngwisanye of the plans made for the affected staff members as it showed that BGI had less staff.  In his response, Mr Ngwisanye indicated that those that were not incorporated in the transformation were dispatched to the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security.
