Acting director at the Ministry of Land Management, Water and Sanitation (MLWS), Ms Tracy Molefi says it is imperative for students to come up with solutions on the proper usage of water.

Speaking at MLWS debate awards ceremony in Gaborone on recently, Ms Molefi said secondary school debates were formed in a quest to bridge the gap between students and the ministry as students had not been fully engaged regarding the water crisis currently hitting some parts of the country.

Ms Molefi said the debates engaged all the senior schools in Botswana adding that the latest session of the debates were held in November last year under the theme ‘Decentralisation of water management and water resources.’

She thanked the schools for the participation noting that teachers’ commitment in making sure the students got well equipped with information were also appreciated.

The debates, Ms Molefi said were part of the ministry’s strategic measures in improving the water crisis the country was faced with.

She emphasised the importance of students involvement in any problem faced by the nation being the leaders of tomorrow.

For his part, deputy director at Department of Water Affairs, Mr Pelotshweu Phofuetsile said it was important to note that the population was increasing and water resources were not increasing.

In terms of the debate, Mr Phofuetsile said there was potential in the students adding that he was reassured that the country had a future while encouraging them to study hard.

He thanked teachers for making a difference in creating a wealth of knowledge in the country by producing leaders of tomorrow.

Mr Phofuetsile said not all teachers could become permanent secretaries but they produce them.

Kgari Sechele II Senior Secondary School in Southern region became champions of the debate followed by Mater Spei College and Selebi Phikwe Senior Schools from Northern region respectively. ENDS
