Ministry reviewes destitute policy

14 Mar 2018

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso told Parliament that her ministry agrees that the P300 or less per month earning for somebody to be considered under the destitution programme is too low.

Ms Tshireletso also stated that her ministry had adopted a holistic review of the destitute policy ‘which is now being concluded and that the finalisation of the policy awaits other strategies being developed such as the National Social Protection Framework and Graduation Strategy, which have to be aligned with the reviewed Destitute Policy.’

The assistant minister further explained that Phase IV Social and Community Development office in Francistown had been operating with one vehicle. However, the council had procured new vehicles and one additional vehicle had been allocated to Phase IV offices.

Ms Tshireletso was answering a question from Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi, who had asked her whether it still made sense to deny people who earn P300 per month the destitution status.

MP Mmolotsi also wanted to know when that figure would be revised to correspond with the current times, and when the IV S&CD office in Francistown would be provided with enough vehicles. Ends
