BIUST hostels ready for use

12 Mar 2018

Red East Construction Company has handed over new students’ hostels to Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST).

The P97.4 million project entailed 594 units for male and female students, two wardens and landscaping.

Handing over the project during the handing over ceremony at BIUST last week, the project engineer, Mr City Mafa said he and his team were happy to have delivered the project on time and on budget.

He said it could not have been possible without the support of the user client, BIUST which saw to it that the contractors were paid on time.

He said sometimes the delay in delivering projects on time was caused by the delay to pay contractors on time. He commended BIUST for adhering to the set service standards.

“We are happy to have delivered the project on time despite the challenges we encountered which were beyond the confines of the project,” he said.

He commended the contractor, consultants and BIUST for having worked together as a team.

Receiving the hostels, BIUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Otlogetswe Totolo said BIUST was committed to housing all the students within campus.

He said it guaranteed students better access to university amenities including the library, Internet, group discussions and safe social gatherings.

Consistent with the BIUST master plan, he said the design of the hotels had incorporated green technologies, including solar panels for heating water and rain water harvesting for irrigation purposes.

He said BIUST was a growing university with a targeted growth of 6 000 students by 2023, hence the need for accommodation would continue, adding that more infrastructure developments would take place in the foreseeable future.

Prof. Totolo commended the company for delivering the project as envisaged without budgetary overruns.

He also added that BIUST was committed to presenting to all its students and staff a unique and compelling experience of campus life that was the envy of other institutions.

The contractor, Mr Liu Delin thanked everybody who contributed to the success of the project.

He also commended his team for delivering the project on time and on budget.

Currently 1 556 students have been housed on campus whilst 220 have been accommodated at the hostels that were used by Fengyue Glass Manufacturing Company employees. Ends
