Drinking water is not only about quenching thirst, but also to give the body fluids required for normal function, says a dietician at Mahalapye District Health Management Team (DHMT), Ms Masego Champion.
Ms Champion explained at a workshop organised by Mahalapye police for workplace health and safety committee members that it was important to drink water regularly as it sustained body fluids.
She said even during the cold season it was important to drink water regularly.
Ms Champion said a healthy eating plan would result from a balanced meal which would ultimately result in good health.
The dietician appealed to workshop attendants to focus on a diet high on roughage, vegetables and fruits. “Focus on foods that are not fully processed,” she said.
Ms Champion also said liquids high in alcohol and soda contributed to increased body mass.
Based on the current eating habits and lifestyles of people, Ms Champion said she was of the view that education on healthy eating must be intensified.
She added that a healthy and balanced diet would boost the immune system.
Asked on the consequences of fasting, Ms Champion said “there is nothing wrong with fasting,” adding that it has some health benefits of removing toxins from the body.
She noted that some people fasted as a recommendation from doctors to reduce weight.
She, however, advised those engaged in fasting to draw up a proper and healthy eating plan.
She also advised that when people break from fasting they should follow a healthy plan and eat well.
“Lose weight by eating a healthy diet,” she said.
Ms Champion also advised people who were eager to lose weight to be cautious and avoid eating plans that were likely to weaken their bodies. END
