President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has told Sefhare/Ramokgonami residents that serving the nation is all about commitment and sacrifice.
President Khama appealed to those given responsibilities to serve the public diligently as required. He said this on Friday when bidding farewell to Sefhare/Ramokgonami residents at Sefhare.
He said people who gave their all to serve people moved away from their comfort zones to venture into fields which they were never trained for.
“I appeal to you all to continue working hard when serving people, this is a national service, we must commit to and take the nation forward,” he said.
President Khama said opting for better paying jobs would not take the nation anywhere. He appealed to every individual to sacrifice.
He noted that he has a military training but that because of his desire to serve people, he had no fear of breaking frontiers and worked hard to drive the ambitions of the people.
“You must have an instinct to achieve,” he added.
President Khama applauded the MP for Sefhare/Ramokgonami, Ms Dorcas Makgato as an exemplary leader who had left her lucrative and better paying job to serve the people.
President Khama noted that when he took over the presidency, he was confronted by misfortunes among them the economic recession, Foot and Mouth Disease, shortage of water and power interruptions.
He said it resulted in some of his initiatives aimed at empowering people delayed.
President Khama also applauded Batswana for showering him with gifts that were aligned to his dream of engaging in agriculture.
He told residents that he had started ploughing and rearing small stock, and that he intended to start a poultry project in April. Acknowledging the 140 chickens he received from the community of Sefhare/Ramokgonami, President Khama applauded them for advancing his intentions of starting a poultry project. He promised to continue serving the nation even after leaving the presidency.
As the paramount chief of Bangwato, President Khama assured residents that he would be working with Bangwato Regent, Kgosi Sediegeng Kgamane in serving morafe.
He further stated that he would not be earning a salary while engaging with morafe on bogosi activities.
For her part, Ms Makgato, who is also the Minister of Health and Wellness, described President Khama as a profound leader blessed to lead the nation diligently.
Ms Makgato said leaders must focus on serving the interests of the people, noting that President Khama dedicated his time to serving people.
The nation, she said, would continue to move forward and emulate what President Khama had done.
Despite the economic recession, Ms Makgato said President Khama managed to navigate his ship that carried the nation.
She said he gave young people renewed hope by encouraging them to live a healthy lifestyle through sports and arts. BOPA
