Earthquake rocks Kasane area

Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI) wishes to inform members of the public that there was an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale in the Kazungula-Kasane area in the morning of February 9.
The event occurred in the early hours around 4:32 am.
The event was well recorded by the global seismographic stations, including the Botswana seismic stations at Sekoma (SKOMA) and Magotlhwane (LBTB) as well as stations in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The institute has received reports from the public in Kazungula and Kasane Plateau areas.
The BGI would like to assure the public that there is no imminent threat to the country, and therefore the public is advised that it is safe to continue work as normal while the institute continues to monitor the situation.
Botswana Geoscience Institute continues to monitor earthquakes in Botswana in collaboration with its international partners and will inform the members of the general public through all available channels.
Furthermore, they will continue to sensitise and educate the public on earthquakes and safety precautions to be followed in the event of an earthquake. Ends
