Let us respect ourselves

19 Jan 2018

In any democracy it is to be expected that the press will serve as a public watchdog through the publication of articles and commentary on perceived deficiencies in the provision of public services.
Government thus fully appreciates that issues such as the recognised challenge of classroom overcrowding being experienced in some schools are matters of legitimate public concern that will inevitably draw press attention.
We would, however, wish to appeal to media house exercise discretion in the use of denigrating language in their reporting.
In this respect we can only express our disappointment at the front-page headline that appeared in the current (January 18, 2018) edition of the Botswana Gazette newspaper.
Let us respect ourselves, while leaving such unfortunate and crude language to others. ENDS
