Masisi donates bicycles to police
18 Jan 2018
Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi has donated 17 bicycles to Botswana Police Service (BPS).
Mr Masisi who was addressing a kgotla meeting in Manyana on Wednesday, handed over the bicycles to police officers to use in their daily patrols.
The Vice President said the donation came after realising that shortage of transport hindered BPS from executing its duties efficiently.
He said due to lack of funds, he managed to get bicycles instead of vehicles and thus hopeful that bicycles would assist police officers in his constituency to do their daily duties with ease at all times.
He added that bicycles would also enable officers to conduct patrols everywhere, including at the cattleposts and lands.
Mr Masisi, who is also Member of Parliament for Moshupa/Manyana constituency, appealed to Manyana residents and surrounding villages to work jointly with the police to keep peace and stability as well as protect their property.
He stated that police officers were protected by law hence they should focus on maintaining law and order and should not allow members of the community to take law into their own hands.
Further, he advised residents to read and understand laws and the Botswana Constitution and desist from crime, which included stealing and house breaking.
Thus, he advised them to utilise government assistance programmes available to establish businesses and create employment for themselves and others.
Receiving the bicycles, deputy commissioner of police, Ms Dinah Marathe thanked Mr Masisi for the donation saying the gesture signalled good leadership.
She further said BPS would fully combat crime with the support from the community.
She said BPS was rated number one in Africa for doing their work effectively and peacefully and for bringing stability in the country as well as protecting people’s rights and property. ENDS
