OP receives charity donations

14 Dec 2017

Senior Private Secretary to the President, Brigadier George Tlhalerwa has commended companies that have come to the rescue of some communities who had given up on the festive celebrations.

Speaking during donations to the President’s Charitable Fund at the Office of the President on December 13, Brig. Tlhalerwa said most companies that donated have done so in the past and implored them to continue supporting the less privileged.

Amongst the donating companies was the World Group of Companies and the groups chairperson, Mr Farouk Sadar.

Brig. Tlhalerwa said Mr Sadar was a familiar face at the Office of the President as his company had previously donated football kits to schools across the country.

He also noted that the group sponsored a football tournament in the Kgalagadi District area of Bokspits and Khwa.

He added that the winning teams were given prize money.

The Bazezuru community, through the Africa Gospel Church, also donated 200 baths and 100 buckets to remote communities.

It is not usual for teams to donate, but for Mogoditshane Fighters, the needs of the community surpassed their own.

Together with Gaborone University College of Law and Peermont Botswana, they also gave various donations.

The college of law has offered scholarships to underprivileged students and Brig. Tlhalerwa said they would be offered to people with disabilities.

For his part, Mr Ben Van Rooyen, chief finance officer of Peermont Botswana, owners of the Grand Palm, donated a cheque amounting to P20 000.

Brig. Tlhalerwa said Mogoditshane Fighters, playing in the Debswana First Division South League, could have channeled the money towards paying their salaries.

He said since the inception of the President’s Charitable Fund nine years ago, they have donated 6 000 jackets, 3 000 solar lamps, 5 000 Bibles and 2 000 arm chairs for dikgosi across the country aimed at promoting culture.

Furthermore, 120 scholarships have been offered and 67 teams have received kits and balls. ENDS
