Kagiso secondary school pins hope on boot camp

11 Dec 2017

Kagiso Senior Secondary School is pinning its hopes on the boot camp initiative to spur its academic performance.

This came to light during the school boot camp training recently as the school head, Ms Chandapiwa Dladla emphasised that the boot camp was to ultimately also help in improving academic performance.

She noted that during training, students would be taught life skills, which would also address spiritual, cultural and physical wellbeing.

“But all these are being done for the success of your academics,” said Ms Dladla.

Therefore she expressed optimism that students would improve, adding that even those who sat for BGCSE this year went through the same process.

She encouraged students to resist the temptation of not applying what they have learned during the boot camp, saying implementing the lesson learnt was a sure way to success.

Principal education officer from South East Sub-region, Mr Sesupo Lesole said the boot camp started with a small number of students to address their discipline issues, but the results were overwhelming that it was then rolled out to various schools to address challenges faced by learners.

Thus, he encouraged the students to stick to communal values, principles and standards.

He said the society by its nature questioned anyone who deviated from the traditional norms and morals, hence the students should try by all means to observe those.

Mr Lesole said no parent or teacher would want to see students deviate to indiscipline.

“There is no parent or teacher who wants you to be a useless person in the society,” he cautioned the students.

He noted that all students had a potential to make it in life and added that indiscipline and lack of commitment to their work hurt both teachers and parents.

Another speaker, Taung Junior Secondary School head, Ms Cynthia Tshiamo said her school used to face problems such as negligence of school work, alcohol and substance abuse and they had to embark on a boot camp to address the problems.

She encouraged the students to respect education, adding that they had the best qualified teachers, hence they only had to apply themselves.

The boot camp is held under the theme; 'Zero Substance and Drugs Intake, I can Change the World.' ENDS
